Right-wing paramilitary recruits train August 13, 2002 while their wooden training weapons remain on the ground during a demonstration in the mountains of Antioquia province. Paramilitaries fighters control neighborhoods close to Medellin, one of the country's main cities, to try and keep left-wing guerillas out of the area. Groups of young men, their heads and faces painted black, grip mock weapons carved from wood and take position in the sweltering Colombian jungle. Gruff paramilitary instructors call out a flurry of commands, instructing the newest recruits how to secure blind spots behind trees and among the brush at this secret training ground a few hours drive from Medellin.
