Collection Spotlight: The Minneapolis Institute of Arts

From Rembrandt to Matisse, explore the gorgeous diverse collection of fine art from the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.

The MIA is one of the largest arts educators in Minnesota. More than a half-million people visit the museum each year and a hundred thousand more are reached through the museum’s Art Adventure program for elementary schoolchildren. The museum’s free general admission policy, public programs, classes for children and adults, and award-winning interactive media programs have helped to broaden and deepen this museum’s roots in the communities it serves

Founded in 1883 by twenty-five citizens of Minneapolis, the museum's purpose was to bring outstanding works of art from diverse cultures into the city’s community. The museum’s mission can be seen through all of its exhibitions. The Asian collection includes pieces from 27 different Asian cultures and spans over 5,000 years. The Arts of Africa and the Americas collection contains works by native peoples all around the world ranging from a rare Luba mask to three thousand year old Olmec artifacts.
