Collection Spotlight: Royal Society for Asian Affairs
Published 30/03/2017
Explore the world's largest continent through the Royal Society for Asian Affairs, Bridgeman's most recently partnered collection which focuses on Asian art, culture, and history with an emphasis on Central Asia.
Established in 1901, this 116-year old society has made its life purpose to spread knowledge and understanding of Asian art, culture, and history throughout the United Kingdom and the world. Originally called the Central Asian Society, which focused on countries such as Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan, the RSAA has now expanded to include all of Asia, from the Middle East to Japan. The society provides activities, lectures, and even a triannual journal called Asian Affairs to provide easy access to those hoping to gain a greater understanding of, not only ancient Asia, but also current events going on throughout the continent today.
The RSAA collection includes unique and varied images that span from the mid-19th century to the present day. It includes maps, images, personal papers, and an expansive photographic collection. Many of the photographs date back to the late 19th century and span all the way to modern times.
