A walk down the street from the beautiful Atlanta Botantical Garden to Atlanta's art district will lead you to the the High Museum of Art, the leading art museum in the southeastern United States. The museum's galleries are lined with a collection that spans from ancient and contemporary African art to European Impressionist masterpieces to modern and contemporary art from around the world, including an ever-expanding collection by African-American artists. The High is also distinguished as the first general museum in North America to have a full-time curator devoted to folk and self-taught art.
Founded in 1905, the High has become the leading world art museum in the Southeastern United States, as well as the 95th world art museum in the world. The vast building known today as the High Museum of Art was completed in 1983, and was designed by architect Richard Meier (who went on to win the Pritzker Architecture Prize).
The expansive permanent collection at the museum boasts a plethora of work from different cultures and time periods. These collections include detailed works of African Art, American Art, decorative arts and design, European art, folk and self-taught art, modern and contemporary art, and photography. Highlights of the collection include works by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Claude Monet, Martin Johnson Heade, Dorothea Lange, Clarence John Laughlin, and Chuck Close.
