The Davis Museum is one of the oldest and most celebrated academic museums for fine art in the United States. Founded in 1875 by the first president of Wellesley College, its vast collection of paintings, drawings, prints, photography and plaster-casts are an invaluable educational resource for its liberal arts students.
Throughout its history, the Davis has collaborated with many eminent figures in the museum world, including Alice Van Vechten Brown, who modeled the museum on the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, and John McAndrew, who was the first curator of architecture at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
Collections From classical marbles to 20th century photography, the 11,000 objects at the Davis span the length and breadth of history.
The museum still actively collects new works that emphasize the research interests of its students and holds temporary exhibitions based on its permanent collection, including studies of Louise Nevelson, Tibetan Buddhist art and Venetian drawings.
