A master of colorful and rhythmical compositions, steeped in Jamaican Revivalism

Renowned California based artist Bernard Stanley Hoyes has become an established name in furthering the success of African-American art in the United States. Colorful, vibrant and expressive of joy, many of his best paintings are available for licensing via the Bridgeman archive. Spiritual themes inspired by a Jamaican heritage Drawing inspiration from his life in Jamaica and the US, Hoyes has been touted as a “master of colorful and rhythmical compositions”. The spiritual themes of his work relate to his family’s Jamaican heritage and involvement in Rastafarian ritual ceremonies and Revival Worship, contributing to his unique artwork described as “authentic revelations of altered states of reality”. Find out more... Hoyes began developing his artistic talents at the age of nine, selling his works to foreign tourists in his home town of Kingston, Jamaica. At fifteen he moved to New York City to pursue formal artistic training and matured as a painter and a sculptor through studying with established artists such as Norman Lewis, Huie Lee Smith and John Torres. Promoting Caribbean culture Hoyes work is exhibited and collected internationally, including Germany and the Netherlands where he completed a four month exhibiting tour in 2009. During the late 1970’s, he formed the Caribbean Cultural Institute and Caribbean Arts, Inc. to further expose Caribbean culture to America, and has four times received the Certificate of Appreciation of Black History Month from the city of Los Angeles. |
