“Here is their spirit, in the heart of the land they loved; and here we guard the record which they themselves made.” Charles Bean, 1948, The Australian War Memorial’s founder and Australia’s official historian of the First World War

More than a Memorial

Established to commemorate the sacrifice of all Australians lost in war, The Australian War Memorial is not only a place of remembrance but a world-class museum with an extensive historical archive.

The Memorial’s mission is to “assist Australians to remember, interpret and understand the Australian experience of war and its enduring impact on Australian society” through an outstanding collection of fine art, official records and heraldry, as well as their footage and audio archives.

Bridgeman now proudly represents the remarkable archival collection of stills from The Australian War Memorial, with our relationship and content from the collection growing daily.

Evidence of Conflict

Located in Campbell, just outside the country's captial, The Memorial was founded by renowned historians Charles Bean and John Treloar who began their collection in 1916 in an effort to preserve “evidence of conflict” during the First World War.

The building itself was completed shortly after the outbreak of World War II, and was officially opened in a Remembrance Day celebration on November 11, 1941.

Ranging from colonial conflicts to the present day, the Memorial’s archives are a vast depth of military history including highlights such as the Anzac collection documenting the Australian and New Zealand armed forces, their outstanding photography archive, as well as imagery and footage commissioned for The Australian War Memorial for the Official War Art Scheme.
