We’re excited to announce that our popular Bridgeman Studio artist, Mark Adlington, has been commissioned to illustrate the centenary edition of Gavin Maxwell’s autobiography ‘Ring of Bright Water’, which will be published in the UK on 15th July 2014 to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the author’s birth, and on 15th August 2014 in the United States.

Centenary celebration of man and nature

Hailed as a masterpiece upon its first publication in 1960, ‘Ring of Bright Water’ explores Scottish naturalist Gavin Maxwell (1914 - 1969) 's relationship with his pet otter Mijbil, who he acquired in Iraq in 1956 and brought back to Scotland.

This lyrical and timeless tale of man and nature has sold millions of copies worldwide and has been adapted into a feature film.

His research has taken him from Spain to the Arabian Peninsula and the coastline of the British Isles, recording the animals in their natural environment. Most recently, he went to Mongolia to study the famous Przewalski horses

Mark grew up with wild otters in Ireland, and also studied British otters in the New Forest Wildlife Park and Otter Rehabilitation Centre. He will be showing his new artwork at th John Martin Gallery’s ‘Still Bright Water’ group exhibition in London from 18th July – 8th August 2014 to coincide with the centenary edition publication.
