The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision

The First World War

The most recent addition to the Beeld en Geluid collection provides a unique insight into the Great War. Most notable are clips from the Battle of Verdun of 1916, fought between the French and the German armies on the Western Front. Watch brave “poilus” - as the French WW1 infantrymen were affectionately called - prepare for battle and wait for attack on the barren fields of Northern France. See footage of Georges “Le Tigre” Clemenceau, the Radical Party Prime Minister, who lead France to victory, and the brave flying aces, Hector Garaud and Georges Madon. These remarkable pilots claimed 38 aerial victories between them during the four-year war. Madon was 22 at the start of the war and Garaud was just 17 years old. Footage displaying the state of post-war Germany can also be found, including the restoration of obliterated towns and buildings, and the treatment of children with severe illnesses, such as rickets and tuberculosis

The Second World War

Technology made enormous leaps during the inter-war years, not least within the realms of film and broadcasting. Beeld en Geluid’s vast body of Dutch newsreel footage from WW2 shows how much more extensively the Second World War was covered on camera. Involving everything from ground, aerial and naval warfare (including the Pearl Harbour attack), to propaganda, women’s roles, children’s institutions, and recruitment and training of members of the ‘Jeugdstorm’ (Youthstorm). This was the youth organisation of the NSB (National Socialist Movement in the Netherlands), an organisation that followed the example of the Hitler Youth in Germany. Hitler, Mussert, Goebbels and many other powerful leaders feature throughout the collection. The end of the war is also well documented; see this clip of the Dutch celebrating the liberation of the Netherlands from Nazi rule in 1945, and this very moving piece of film showing Polish survivors reunited with their children in 1946.

The Dutch East Indies and the
Indonesian National Revolution

Up until the end of World War Two, the Dutch held colonial rule over what is now the Republic of Indonesia. As the Empire's power waned throughout WW2, and the Japanese occupation put an end to Dutch rule, the Indonesian independence movement broke through, with the Republic’s founding president, Sukarno, leading the war for independence. This collection holds over 350 clips documenting civilian and military life before, during and after the Indonesian National Revolution. Watch this amusing clip of Indonesian army recruits being measured, weighed and shaved! The collection documents the agricultural industry of the Dutch East Indies, with clips of logging, weaving, and fishing, as well as tea, sugar, tobacco, rice and cotton production. It contains some fascinating examples of Indonesian cultural practices, such as this rather alarming method of cleaning a new-born baby, and a traditional 1938 marital dance (the latter being a very early example of colour film).  It also holds the most pivotal moments in that period of Indonesian history, such as Sukarno being sworn into presidency, the raising of the Republican flag, and the printing and selling of the first Indonesian national newspaper, ‘Merdeka” (meaning independence or freedom). The newspaper ran until 2009.

Animated Short Films

The Beeld en Geluid collection holds many surprises, and not just in the medium of film. It is also home to over 30 short animations, produced by Nico Crama between 1970 and 1997. Producer and director Nico Crama played an important role in putting Dutch animation on the map in the 70s. This selection of work, by various animators, range from the educational, with “The Importance of Voting” to the surreal and philosophical, with “Museum” by Petra Dolleman. A Bridgeman Footage favourite is the playful and dreamlike “Back To The Inkwell”, which makes reference to animation through the ages, with a nice little cameo from Betty Boop!
