Joanna's Pics and Clips

Joanna Smith

Joanna, our Customer Service Representative in New York selects her favourites from the archive, from mouthwatering paintings to colour footage from WW2.

What is your role at Bridgeman Images?

As the Customer Service Representative, I support the Account Managers in their support of our clients. I draft invoices, process payments, and assist with a multitude of tasks.

What do you love most about your job?

I love getting to interact with the library. I do this primarily through research and most often through drafting invoices for Account Managers.

What misconceptions do clients most commonly have about the archive?

The most common misconception is that it is static, meaning just images. People are always surprised and delighted to learn that we have footage. We’ve made a lot of sales from clients who previously weren't aware we had footage.

Joanna's top picks are...

Spilled Bag of Cherries, Antoine Vollon

Spilled Bag of Cherries, Antoine Vollon / Johnny van Haeften Gallery, London, UK

I like that this is kind of a riff on a still life painting.  It leaves me wondering who dropped the cherries? What was going on for this painting to happen? The cherries also look delicious.

Winescape, Lincoln Seligman

Winescape, 1998 © Lincoln Seligman / Bridgeman Images

I enjoy wine, so this painting jumped out at me. It looks like it was from the 18th or 19th century, but it isn’t. It’s amazing how a painting can transport you back to a time period.

Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer, Gustav Klimt

Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer. Elegantly dressed with a necklace and bracelet.
Painting by Gustav Klimt (1862-1918), 1907. Oil on canvas. Neue Galerie, New York

This is my favorite painting. Aesthetically, it’s beautifully ornate and exquisitely rendered. Historically, it has quite the story to tell. I’m fortunate enough to be able to see it in person when I want to and it never fails to entrance me.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, 1971 film release poster

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Mel Stuart with
Peter Ostrum, Jack Albertson, 1971 / RDA

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is one of my favorite movies. I always enjoy gems like this French poster. You can see several of the characters on it and I find that it provides good insight into the atmosphere of the actual film.

Red Velvet Cupcake, Nancy Charalambous

I love red velvet cupcakes and am particularly attracted to the bright colors of this picture. It’s such an appealing image and very visually stimulating. It makes me want to go out and get a cupcake right away!

Video: Churchill at Buckingham Palace with the Royal Family, VE Day, 8th May 1945

I really enjoy The Crown on Netflix and getting to see a young Princess Elizabeth, the rest of the royal family, and Winston Churchill on VE Day is such a treat. The fact that it is in color is remarkable for the time. The excitement over the end of World War II is palpable and I can’t help but get swept up in it.
